PHOTO ESTIMATES

How accurate are meal photo calorie estimates?

A food photo is useful evidence, but it is not a scale, recipe or nutrition label. The best result combines the image with a few details from you.

A meal photo can often identify visible foods and suggest a reasonable range. It cannot reliably see exact weight, hidden oil, fillings, sauces or recipe quantities. Treat the result as an estimate, review the confidence shown for each item and correct important details.

How WazzUp presents uncertainty

WazzUp can show an estimated calorie range and a visual confidence level for recognised items. Confidence describes how sure the visual identification is; it does not guarantee that the portion or nutrition is exact. When confidence is lower, the useful next step is a short clarification or a suggested alternative.

How to improve the estimate

  1. Photograph the whole plate in good light.
  2. Include a familiar object or state the portion.
  3. Name sauces, oils, drinks and anything hidden.
  4. Use a nutrition label or menu value when one is available.
  5. Reply to the exact result with the corrected value or food.

Example: “Total for this bowl is 327 calories, and the protein is pesto chicken rather than teriyaki chicken.” A correction like this identifies both the value and the affected entry.

Should you use the number?

Use estimates to understand patterns and make consistent comparisons. Avoid treating a photo-derived number as laboratory measurement. If you need precise nutrition for a medical reason, use a method recommended by a qualified healthcare professional.
